Lack of snow upon Cypress Mountain.
Lack of snow upon Cypress Mountain.
Within the past weeks, Cypress Mountain’s lack of snow has generated much news within the lower mainland. The temperature- 4°C is the highest ever recorded. As a result, the mountain was closed two weeks prior to its scheduled date due to the lack of snow. The head of the International Olympic Committee also reassures the public that the event will take place at Cypress Mountain for sure. VANOC took action by fertilizing the snow, producing artificial snow with 100 million litres of water. As of today, they are transporting over 150 truckloads of fresh snow for the next several days. 150 truckloads is a lot of snow, but it is being transported over 257 kilometres of road from Allison Pass which is near Manning Park. The fact that they are preserving the Olympic venue is great, but what about the wildlife’s habitat? They could have handled this situation better, but as shown in the photos above, there have been great improvements. -dm
